Childhood ADHD Symptoms
It’s not unusual for most children to have one or two symptoms of ADHD now and then. However, in ADHD, the symptoms are greater in number and present much more often. This, in turn, causes problems for the child at home and school, and while socializing.
Children with ADHD can:
- Fidget, squirm, have trouble remaining seated, run and jump excessively
- Be seen as defiant by school officials and authority figures because of their impulsive behaviours (such as yelling out answers in class)
- Have trouble waiting their turn, sharing, letting others talk
- Appear selfish or disobedient, because they may interrupt or not act as expected and go against social norms in social situations
- Rarely be quiet while playing, and may talk constantly (even in places where being quiet is expected, such as a library)
- Act without thinking about consequences, such as darting out in front of a car
- Be accident-prone
- Make careless mistakes at school
- Fail to pay attention well in a classroom setting
- Have short attention spans
- Fail to listen or process information well
- Leave schoolwork and chores uncompleted
- Have difficulty moving from activity to activity
- Lose things often
- Often forget normal routines and daily activities (e.g., doing chores)
